At BAW Plastics Inc., a family-owned custom retail display manufacturer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we’ve seen a lot change since our doors first opened in 1981. Shopping malls have evolved into digital marketplaces. Pop-up displays have transformed into immersive brand experiences. Materials have become lighter, stronger, and more sustainable.
But through all that change, one thing has never wavered — our commitment to craftsmanship, creativity, and problem-solving.
After more than four decades of fabricating custom plastic, metal, and wood displays for clients across the country, we’ve gathered a few lessons worth sharing.
1. Details Make the Difference in Display Manufacturing
Precision is everything. Whether it’s a CNC-routed component or a custom metal bracket, the smallest details often separate a good display from a great one.
We’ve learned that the old saying still holds true: measure twice, cut once — especially when the finished piece represents someone else’s brand. In the world of point-of-purchase displays (POP), accuracy and finish can make or break a customer’s first impression.
2. Collaboration Beats Competition
The best results come when clients and fabricators work as one team. We’ve collaborated with countless designers, engineers, and retailers to turn sketches into structures, bringing creative ideas to life through practical expertise. When everyone’s invested in the process — from brainstorming to installation — the display speaks for itself. Collaboration builds trust, and trust builds long-term partnerships.
3. Adaptability Keeps Retail Displays Relevant
From evolving retail trends to breakthrough material technologies, adaptability is the secret ingredient to longevity.
Our 160,000-square-foot facility has grown right alongside our clients’ needs — adding new CNC equipment, digital printing, and finishing capabilities to stay ahead of the curve while maintaining our hands-on craftsmanship. When you’ve been doing this for over 40 years, you learn that adaptability isn’t just about technology — it’s about mindset.
4. Innovation Is Often in the Process
Innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel. Sometimes it’s about finding a smarter, more efficient way to do something familiar — cutting setup time, reducing waste, or improving how a display ships.
One example: when our CNC machine broke down, two of our team members refused to wait weeks and spend thousands on repairs. Instead, they designed a C-shaped ABS replacement part that slipped onto a 40-foot rod and secured the bellows perfectly. Their ingenuity earned them the coveted Tuna Fish Award — our in-house honor for creative problem-solving!
5. People Power Everything
Machines can cut, bend, and print — but people bring creativity, intuition, and problem-solving to every project. From the first design meeting to the final shipment, every job depends on teamwork, respect, and reliability.
That’s the BAW way — a family-owned foundation powered by incredible people who take pride in what they create.
Fun Facts from the Display Industry
The average retail display is seen by over 10,000 shoppers in its lifetime.
70% of purchasing decisions are made in-store — proof that a well-crafted display truly matters.
Acrylic remains one of the most versatile materials, used in everything from cosmetic counters to golf cart windshields (a BAW specialty!).
Modular and sustainable displays are on the rise, with more brands choosing recyclable plastics, LED lighting, and reusable components to reduce waste and shipping costs.
Retail environments are evolving again — toward interactive, experience-based displays that blend physical and digital shopping. BAW is already adapting to this next era of retail innovation.
The Big Picture
We’ve learned that making displays is about more than shaping materials — it’s about shaping experiences.
Whether it’s a sleek retail fixture or a custom industrial component, every project carries the same goal: to help our clients stand out, look sharp, and last.
Here’s to the next 40 years of innovation, collaboration, and craftsmanship — proudly made in Pittsburgh, PA.
